From strawberry blonde to deep auburn

Red hair is a spectrum, not a single shade. Light, depth, undertone and the way colour catches the light all change its character.

Start with depth

At the lighter end, strawberry blonde blends golden blonde with a soft blush of red. Light copper has a brighter, more unmistakable orange warmth, while classic copper sits a little deeper and often appears vivid in natural light.

Further along the spectrum are ginger, auburn and mahogany. Ginger can describe a range of warm mid-tones; auburn usually carries more brown; and mahogany tends toward a deeper red-brown finish.

Warm and cool undertones

Two shades with similar depth can feel very different. Golden and orange undertones read warm, while rose, berry or muted brown notes can make a red look cooler or softer. Lighting matters too: indoor light, overcast skies and direct sun can all shift how a shade appears.

Choosing what feels right

If you are considering a colour change, collect reference images in similar lighting and discuss your starting shade, hair history and maintenance preferences with a qualified colourist. A strand test can help set realistic expectations before a larger change.

The best shade is not the one with the most precise label. It is the one that feels like you.
